Lib Dem's win in Downend by-election
Sat 23rd Aug 2008
Downend Liberal Democrats are celebrating the election of their excellent new Councillor, Craig Whittaker in the Downend West by-election. Craig stood on a platform of saving local bus services cuts, improved cleansing at the Willows shopping centre and reducing rat run traffic. We also heard directly from Downend residents their anger at rising taxes and household bills. Many local residents expressed surprise that the Tory run Council failed to put forward a candidate, maybe they did not want to have to explain why their Parliamentary Candidate voted to downgrade Frenchay?

Lib Dems join a 'Preparing the Way' ceremony at the new airport development
Wed 30th Jul 2008
John Kiely was delighted to have been invited by local Lib Dem Cllrs Jan and Geoff Woodley to a ceremony on the airfield to mark the building of the new development by Bovis homes. The ceremony was organised by St Chad's and Patchway Baptist Church with a number of other local Churches. We were all made to feel very welcome by those in attendance and it was a brilliant sunny and warm Sunday afternoon.

Tory Councillor joins Lib Dems
Sat 26th Jul 2008
A former Conservative Councillor has left their party and join the Lib Dems. She tells a story very familiar to local Lib Dems of the South Glos Tory Leadership being out of touch. She was told not to speak up for her community on an issue of importance to her. Knowing that the Lib Dems want their Cllrs to speak up for their communities, she joined us.

KIELY CALLS FOR MORTGAGE SUPPORT
Sun 20th Jul 2008
Former Chair of the West of England Housing partnership John Kiely has written to the Prime Minister to ask for mortgage support for hard pressed homeowners facing mortgage default. John says that whilst he welcomes calls led by the Lib Dems to buy up some of the surplus new houses being built, he also wants to see some of the £50 billion 'earmarked' for the banks to be used to support homeowners in danger of losing their homes. John adds "Its far better for those facing the prospect of defaulting on their mortgages to get some financial help to save them from eviction. I am sure that it will be cheaper in the long run and keep families and communities together. With 1.7m families already waiting for social housing, Labour have failed to make available significant numbers of public rented houses for those in need. I hope that the Government will act on my suggestion to save a lot of mortgage misery."
